Enlisted on 9th December 1915 at Oxford into the Army Reserve, joining the15th (Reserve) Bantam Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment on 12 February 1916. promotd to unpaid L/Cpl 28 June 1916, paid L/Cpl 17 July 1916 and promoted to Cpl 31 July 1916. Appointed unpaid Sgt 6 March 1917 Posted to the 8th Gloucester's in France 24th November 1917.

Listed as missing, 21st March 1918 (also Wounded) and Prisoner of War on 25 March 1918. Repatriated 24th December 1918, discharged from the Army as a Cpl, 12th March 1919.
